Alfred Sedlak opened for business on February 14th 1944.
Al was a master shoe maker from Germany.
He made work boots for wild land firefighters, ranchers, farmers and timber boots for loggers.
He made each boot to each foot for the perfect fit.
He had to. "You can’t make a living if you’re crippled up with bad feet".
Although we no longer make boots here we still follow that same guiding principal . . . Having your feet in our store is the only way to put those feet into shoes and for us to know that those shoes won’t create foot problems for you. So, we don’t sell shoes on-line. Come in and get a proper fitting . . . you owe it to your feet! Don’t you?
Shoe Fitting
Today shoes are made in many different countries around the world. For economic reasons few are made in the USA. Coming from so many different sources this can be a problem in getting a proper fit with a shoe. Thanks to our many years of experience and use of proper industry tools (such as the Brannock Device), we can find the right fit for you.
Size vs. Fit
Shoes coming from Western Europe are sized differently than those coming from the Mediterranean region of Europe.
Shoes coming from China are sized differently than those from South America.
Very often people focus on the size of the shoe instead of focusing on the fit of the shoe.
Size vs. Shape vs. Fit
Virtually all shoes are made on forms and in the shoe industry these form are called Lasts . . . The Last is the first step in the making of the shoe. The Last is normally made from plastic or wood and gives the shoe its form and shape. This Last is used to pattern on and used to stretch the leather over in the shoe making process. When the shoe making process is finished and the Last is removed from the shoe you are left with a space in which to place your foot.
Fitting a shoe properly addresses the shape of the shoe as was formed by the Last, the shape of the foot, the toe length, the smallest portion of the foot, the largest portion which includes the heel length and width, arch length and height, instep length and height, ball length and width and the positioning of the foot when placed in the shoe.
Putting it All Together
When all these areas are correctly addressed you have the basis for a proper fitting shoe that will not create a problem for the feet but will allow for maximum comfort and mobility. Buy for fit, not for size...
